But those who trust in the reality of an afterlife need not be afraid of what comes next, according to Diane Corcoran, a nurse and president of IANDS.

Hmm... I wouldn't say contradictory, just poor choice of words perhaps. One can be spiritual without being religious, I think that's what Diane was trying to convey.
